Popcorn Festival Street Closing Information
Mayor Scott Schertzer is announcing that beginning Tuesday, September 7th at 6:00 p.m., detours will be posted in the downtown Marion area to accommodate the activities for the 2010 Marion Popcorn Festival. Streets will remain closed until after the festival’s conclusion at midnight on Saturday and could remain closed into early Sunday morning for festival clean-up. Mary Holloway Estate Establishes Four Funds at MCF
MARION, OH – A generous gift of $400,000 from the estate of long-time Marion resident Mary H. Holloway has made possible the creation of four new funds to benefit Marion area organizations. Separate funds have been created with Holloway’s gift to support the Humane Society of Marion County, the Marion Palace Theatre and the Marion Family YMCA, as well as the creation of a donor advised fund which will make grant awards based upon suggestions made by the fund’s donor advisor. Grants will begin in 2011.
Holloway was a fixture of Fahey Bank, having served as an executive vice president there for many years.
The Mary H. Holloway Humane Society Fund will benefit the Marion Area Humane Society and provide an annual grant for veterinary care for animals in its care and for animals in the process of being adopted through the Society.

The Ohio State University at Marion
$6 million federal grant will help early childhood education in Ohio
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University has received a $6 million federal grant to help determine if professional development for preschool teachers in Ohio will translate into better-prepared kindergarten students.
The grant from the U.S Department of Education will allow researchers to study 900 early childhood teachers in the state who complete specially designed professional development courses developed by the Ohio Department of Education and the Early Childhood Quality Network (ecQ-net), located at Ohio State. The goal is to see if these courses can affect teachers’ knowledge, beliefs and practices. more...
